transition program
Preparing 18- to 22-year-old students for the world of work is the goal of this program.
- Self-advocacy, self-determination, and independence are embedded in all activities.
- Students attend classes to bring their reading, writing, math, and social skills to levels that will serve
their future success.
- Students hone the employment soft skills so vital to employment, such as interviewing, work ethic,
and punctuality.
- Life prep classes address all aspects of independent living: home maintenance, personal health
management, consumer math, and recreation are a few.
- School-to-Work experiences, including individual internships, increase in frequency and complexity as
students are ready.
MHA collaborates with businesses and community organizations to create the hands-on, field experiences that
students need to put classroom theory into real-life practice. In the company of the MHA job coach, individual
students spend up to four hours at internships on the north shore of Boston. Opportunities have included
retail, industrial, bakery and food service, senior residences, offices, and the public library.
